A few reasons why Smallville sucks

I started watching Smallville in Season 5 a few years ago, when a friend gave it to me after I had nothing else to watch. The early monster of the week seasons never really appealed to me, and I thought season 5 was entertaining enough. By that point Superman had a lot of his powers, and everything had already been established and moved away from the high school drama.

I really liked the series as it progressed from then on. I thought the whole Veritas subplot was a bit stupid, but it worked well enough within the show. I especially liked Michael Rosenbaum’s portrayal of Lex Luthor and think it is possibly the best on screen portrayal so far.

After Season 8 however… the show went downhill in a big way. So very amazingly downhill to the point where I didn’t think it possible that anyone could defend the show as good. Yet, somehow, the show has been renewed for a 10th season and fans are defending the last few seasons as the best ever. Wow.

What follows is a list of the reasons Smallville started to suck, badly. The vast majority of these are post season 7, but one or two have plagued the series throughout.

  • Chloe’s hacking speak. Where do the writers get this dialog? Quotes such as “All I am is a halfway decent hacker who took a wrong turn down the information superhighway”. No one talks like this. Ever. It is truly cringeworthy. Her crazy ability to hack into the FBI in 2 minutes is a bit much as well, but such an ability is hardly unique to Smallville.
  • Jor-El’s near omnipotence. I have no problem with an AI with Jor-El’s personality and knowledge, indeed as advanced a civilization as Krypton seemed it’s perfectly fine. The problem is how could such an AI have such abilities? We have seen The Jor-EL AI stop and reverse time, predict the future, take away and transfer powers, reprogram people’s minds and read them…basically anything. Why would an AI have this much power and how? The other thing I wonder about is when humans get Kryptonian powers…do they become Kryptonian?
  • The excessive slow motion. Bullet time can still be cool if it’s done correctly, but it seems every single fight on Smallville in the later seasons used it. Not just for a few points of the fight…but the whole fight. I guess its easier to fill an episode if it takes 20 seconds for each fist to swing in fight scenes.
  • Clark still can’t fly. It’s been 10 years(well, he may have flew in the season 10 premiere) and the guy can’t fly. He is surrounded by people developing his powers without a problem…why is it taking so long? The main problem with this is not that he doesn’t fly on the show, but that they don’t even try to explain it.
  • The glasses. Something that always kind of bugged me…why have Clark without glasses? If it was in school and he moved on and left everyone old behind..fine. I can’t see parents convince their superkid to wear glasses at a young age, but it also seems that when Superman is finally revealed, all it will take is someone from Smallville to recognize him.
  • The hideous reuse of sets. It seems the only street anyone ever conglomerates on is that one street in Smallville that the Talon is on, which seems eerily similar to the streets of Metropolis. Can they really not afford to film on a street that looks like a street and not a set? It gets worse when characters always meet in the same places, like Clark’s barn. Why are characters who have never been to the barn before meeting in the barn to discuss things? How does that make sense?
  • Dramatic staredowns. This is getting a bit much, but I guess the writers have to do something what with the pathetic lack of budget. All too often several times an episode characters will meet and stare and threaten each other while trying to be intimidating while finding out information. What takes five minutes should take 30 seconds. Annoying.
  • Green Arrow’s training period. In the comics, Green Arrow was stuck on a desert island for years developing his ability to he could have food to live off. On Smallville it only took him two months. It’s kind of a big difference. I mean, could anyone be Green Arrow if they just took a semester archery course?
  • Introducing Jimmy Olsen…not. Why introduce a character with the same name and iconic traits as a well known character, develop him and have him fall in love, only to reveal upon his death that he was not the character we thought he was…that his younger brother who happens to share his name is indeed that character. Idiotic, and actually worse than the Julia Robert’s twist in Oceans 12.
  • Emo Blur. I actually liked the idea of the blur. I thought it was a well thought out predecessor to Superman. Still red and blue colors and a good work around the no flying rule. A nice transitional stage to Superman. Then came Emo Blur. Why in the hell would Clark start dressing in all black? In a neo-punk trenchcoat? It’s just so lame…
  • The whole Doomsday plot. Doomsday was a pretty cool villain. A genetically engineered being designed to fight Superman, who reincarnates each time being impervious to what killed it previously. On Smallville Doomsday was portrayed as a creepy EMT who had trouble with his emotions and started stalking Chloe, leading up to the final battle of what was very clearly a guy in a cheap rubber suit. Aye.
  • The cloned Kandorians. I watched all of season 9, but I didn’t really get this plot. They certainly were not stuck in a bottle. Let’s clone prominent Kryptonians and have them be a new challenge for Clark…except it wasn’t. There was just something about the whole are that seemed lazy and uninteresting, and none of it really seemed to make a lot of sense.
  • We had Doomsday in season 8, the Kandorians in Season 9, and now it seems that Lex is back in Season 10. Hopefully only briefly, as I know the real big bad is meant to be Darkseid…but why bring him back at all? It was bad enough they let him go in the first place. Bring him him back with an obviously different actor and then never showing us his face and hoping we wouldn’t notice was worse. Now bringing back various clone versions of lex? Sigh. Besides, why would the clones be bald?

I guess the show stands for itself, but it will be interesting to see just how bad Season 10 is, and just how the fans defend it as amazing.

  1. Guess what, Season 10’s premiere was awesome. So go back to fucking your Glee Season One DVDs and stop flooding the internet with useless pages such as this one. You’re a tool. Let fans be fans and keep to yourself. Your opinion means nothing if you present it like this.

Did you go fuck your Glee DVDs yet?

    • It’s always sad when someone gets offended simply by someone else’s opinion. I’m really sorry you don’t have the capacity to actually make any kind of argument. It’s not surprising though, considering your taste in TV.

As for Glee, I haven’t watched it yet, but given that it was created by the same guy who did Nip/Tuck, I’ll probably give it a chance.

      • it’s not an effing argument if it doesn’t make sense. In the case of this article. Think of more reasons to why Smallville sucks than just the little tiny details. This show was made for entertainment and to tell the Superman story a different way. Why are we picking on the little camera work and all that? You’re just a sad person cuz you didn’t have any better things to say than to insult someone by their choice in TV. Get a grip.

    • First of all, Glee is actually a successful show with a decent net profit and many viewers. I liked to watch smallville from seasons 1-9 for fun when it was on TV because I thought it was actually okay, despite the horrible special effects, corny lines, bad acting, and unrealistic storyline. But now, season 10 has gotten really stupid. At first it was decent, but I think that there should have been more detail about the relationship between Lois and Clark. The whole government thing and ‘being a patriot’ is just making America look like a pot full of ignorami.Maybe when you begin watching your smallville episodes about superheros you’ll find the strength within yourself to stop hiding behind a username on the web and actually begin to refute ideas and opinions openly and with sufficient evidence.

    • As someone who’s very into the DC universe, and owns about 400 DC comics, but has a high threshold for how good a show or movie has to be for me to enjoy it, I’m happy with seeing different people’s opinions on a show. That’s the only way to honestly know if it’s worth my time. I will be watching Smallville, at least the non-filler episodes, and I’m glad that I had access to different opinions.

If you don’t like someone’s opinion, don’t go around reading their stuff. If you think that the only people who should be able to express themselves are those who agree with you, you’re a cunt.

  2. Okay, first off, NOTHING was worse then the Julia Robert’s “twist” in Ocean’s 12, which was the laziest screenwriting I have EVER seen and completely ruined the moives for me. As for Smallville, you make some good points (the glasses, emo blur), but you leave out a lot of good that the show has done over the last three seasons since the departure of those hacks Miller and Gough. They have moved the Superman mthos forward in a quantum way, and have expanded the DC Universe with the cool addition of various Superman characters (Dan Turpin, Bruno Manheim, Toy Man) that turn an otherwise boring episode into something relevant. While I HATED the Kandorian storyline and thought that Callum Blue’s overacting was terrible, I LOVED the Checkmate sub plot and thought that the season would have worked much better last year by focsing only on that. And I am absolutely THRILLED that they are doing an Apokolis story line this year, which I always wanted them to do but didn’t think they had the balls. I am a bit confused about the introduction of the smoke monster… I mean Darkseid, as his introduction was just totally random, but I am intrigued none the less. I just wish they would have dropped the Tess character, as I don’t feel she adds anyhting important to the show, and they REALLY need to get Clark in a pair of glasses soon or else it will just be confusing when he becomes Superman (just like the second, true Jimmy Olsen introduction). While Smallville is far from flawless, I think you are being WAYYY to hard on the show and need to focus on the plethoria of awesome things they have given the loyal viewer over the last few seasons. He just needs to be flying in tights by the finalle for the show to be considered a sucess, IMHO.

    Comment by RJ — September 28, 2010 @ 12:41 pm

    • Hey RJ, thanks for your reply.

I really thought Miller and Gough did a much better job than the new guys. Indeed, most of why I think the show sucks has to do with stuff that was introduced after they left.

The way they handled Doomsday, the Kandorian arc…all terrible. Checkmate may have been interesting…, but I thoght it was done in a really cheap way. Would a government agency such as Checkmate really leave telltale chess pieces behind as signs? Not to mention Tess happening to be an agent of Checkmate all along. Not to mention tess being a female Lex Luthor.

I do agree, the show did a lot of good. I liked their handling of many characters and the somewhat real world take on things, however everything good the show did was under Miller and Gough.

Can you think of positive things the show had done post Season 7, aside from Checkmate(which we disagree on, but you already mentioned)?

      Comment by allthatiswrong — September 28, 2010 @ 3:39 pm

  3. Positive things since Season 7:

    1. Clark Kent has been at the CENTER OF THE STORY.

    2. Absolute Justice.

    3. The riddance of Lana Lang.

    4. The riddance of Kara Kent-centric episodes.

    5. The show has taken risks.

    6. Continuity. (Mentioning previous episodes)

    7. REAL Villians. (aka DC villians)

    8. Geoff Johns.

    9. Lazarus.

    10. The F’n SUIT.

    11. Glasses.

    12. Watchtower.

    13. Metallo.

    14. Clark Kent works at the Daily Planet.

    15. Clark Kent has been at the CENTER OF THE STORY.

    Comment by g-unit — September 28, 2010 @ 7:17 pm

    • Absolute Justice was interesting, although I was surprised to hear Michael Shanks do a worse Batman voice than Christian Bale.

Clark only was the glasses in one episode IIRC…he definitely doesn’t wear them as though he needs them.

Metallo, Real DC Villians is a moot point…, the show has always had real DC Villians. Zod, Braniac, Bizarro etc. Considering the way they fucked up Doomsday and Zod, definitly not a great point.

The rest of your points…meh. The show had deteriorated significantly since season 7, even if they managed to get a few things right. Which, they really haven’t.

      Comment by allthatiswrong — September 29, 2010 @ 10:27 am

    • 1. Clark Kent has been at the CENTER OF THE STORY.

Since when because the last episode
I watched was centered around Clois

      2. Absolute Justice.

      I agree

      3. The riddance of Lana Lang.

Lana Lang is not bad but way to over used

      4. The riddance of Kara Kent-centric episodes.

Kara is a good charecter, and she had her moments

      5. The show has taken risks.

Name one they went down the safe route that we all excpected [Or atleast I did. the show took more risk before the new producers took over]

      6. Continuity. (Mentioning previous episodes)

HA HA HA Smallville has always had continuity

      7. REAL Villians. (aka DC villians)
Ok Really whats wrong with the villian of the weeks, a lot of the Villians of the week are more memorable then the Acutal DC villains

      8. Geoff Johns.
      WTF
      9. Lazarus.
Dabatable Since I dispised the episode, all it did was serve to pour salt on the wounds, of what Smallville was
      10. The F’n SUIT.
How is that a good thing we all knew the suit would be featured
      11. Glasses.
WTF Clark wore glasses on in off through the entire show.
      12. Watchtower.
Really Watchtower thats cool but really not a stand out in the ocean of crap that is Smallville season 9/10
      13. Metallo.
      Cool Villian

      14. Clark Kent works at the Daily Planet.
I don’t care about the Mythos so Clark working at the Daily Planet didn’t really stand out as a moment.

      15. Clark Kent has been at the CENTER OF THE STORY.
Clois is the center of the story

      Comment by Icon — December 19, 2010 @ 1:11 am

      • I agree with most thing and I really don’t think clois is that good the show made them a couple by force and made them get married which in the comics never happens they moved too fast with them and never made her vulnerable but found a way to make her emotional which is not Lois lane at all that’s why I liked Lana cause she was more interesting and you could never truely grip her on to Clark which made me watch even more waiting to see what would happen next but clois is too predictable

        Comment by killerking287 — February 24, 2015 @ 4:30 pm

  4. Here are some of my sour notes for Smallville’s Run (coming from a DIE HARD DC Universe/Smallville fan):

Product Placement Pete (The godforsaken Gum/Kryptonite episode, “YEAH REMY ZERO”, etc)

The Isobel storyline (Kill it with fire)

Lana in a kryptonite suit. Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.

The Vampire Episode. Again. WTF where they thinking?

Those were just to name a few…

Overall though, I love the show and will be a little sad to see it go.

    Comment by oddzuki — September 28, 2010 @ 10:28 pm

  5. Well, imo Smallville stopped being interesting since begining of season 7, since Kara/Lana/Lex/Clark plot that lasted only 3 episodes… so sad lol

But actually I quit Smallville live broadcasting since season 5 (Brainiac, Lana finding Clark’s secret, Jonhatan death, etc…). They should have actually move to METROPOLIS show or something like that and then carry on.

But well, I don’t know, I just don’t care if Smallville would be renewed for 12 of 13th season, inventing storylines as much as it gets money, it’s all about money right

PS : Smallville (first 5 seasons) was one of the best show unlike the full 10 seasons of Friends which were all great.

    Comment by Salomons — October 23, 2010 @ 4:10 pm

    • Hey Salomons,

You can relax, the 10th season is the final — I guess they realized 10 years and an almost 30 Clark still not being Superman is a bit ridiculous.

      Comment by allthatiswrong — October 25, 2010 @ 2:56 am

    • Yes it was the first five seasons were so interesting and showed more of his smallville life not metropolis and superman life

      Comment by killerking287 — February 24, 2015 @ 4:33 pm

  6. One of those masochistic few still watching this crappy show, I kinda agree with almost everything you wrote.

The dialogue, not just the hacker speak, is ridiculous across the board. No one talks all pop culture catchphrases. The sets, the effects, the bad plots like S8 and the horrible DD story, S9’s Kandorian stuff.

Were I to make a list of why this show sucks, it’d be more of a 10-part series and have a lot more cursing.

  8. I completely agree with you on all of your post
Except I have a couple things to [Most have to do with the Relationship, between Clark, and Chloe]
    add
    1. Chloe was clearly created to be Clarks after Lana girl yet the new producers decided it would be a super bright Idea to have lois, and Clark do the up and down game, even though their actors had NO on screen Chemistry
    2. The transition between season 8, and 9 was terrible.all they did was turn Oliver into Batman, Chloe into a season 1 Lex Luthor [A good guy with evil tendecies, who would always do what was right] Lois into a carbon copy of her terrible comic counterpart, and turned Clark into a Kal [His red K counter part]
    3. The terrible Clois Subplots
    4. the Over use of the Greeb Arrow, no offence to Just Hartly because he is great, but why is he recieving the same ammount of on screen time as Clark.
    5. THe rushing of Lois/Clark, and Chloe/Oliver. Both of these charecters could’ve been great. but the complete and utter lack of Lois/Clark onscreen interaction, pre season 9 made them seem rushed and unnatural. and Chloe/Oliver that was just a stupid, not only did they have NO onscreen time until season nine. but until the episode with the silver banshee had NO romantic relationship, or any movement towards the two falling for one another.
    6. the terrible over arching plots, and episode plots. ok Season seven had about ten astounding episodes, the once that made everybody remember what they love about the show. Season eight had no astounding episodes, Season nine had only Absolute Justice [Which had its major flaw, Lois, Doctor Fate dyeing, and Star girls costume]
and Season 10 is just spitting on the name of smallville
7.the costume Design sucked for both of Clarks Pre costumes. I mean come first we have neo Clark. which was atleast esthetically pleasing. but his Red, and blue costume just looked plain gay. How hard would it to have Tom Wear a bright red trench coat, dark blue t-shirt. with the superman Symbol his chest, and on the back of the red trench coat, and hood [Becuase the whole hiding behind the fake nerdy persona wouldn’t work in smallville.
    8. the Over use of future sight. every charecter seems to have some type of vision of the future, and Clark seems to be having future visions every episode

    Comment by Icon — December 17, 2010 @ 7:13 pm

    • Hey Icon,

What did you think of the second last episode, where Clark was in the alternate reality?

I thought it was surprisingly good!

      Comment by allthatiswrong — December 17, 2010 @ 10:50 pm

    • Which one the one Clark Luthor, and Lois marrying Oliver.
It was suprisingly good but saying I lowered my standard since the very begining of season 9. But it showed that the writers had tons of skill, and Tom Welling, and Erica Durance still have acting talent to hold the show. sad thing is the that writing took a major drop in Icarus, and make me not even watch the one in January

      Comment by Icon — December 17, 2010 @ 11:50 pm

    • Icon I think you’re completely right on everything you just said but how do you feel about Clark and Lana in throughout the show

      Comment by killerking287 — February 24, 2015 @ 4:38 pm

  9. I am probably one of the biggest Superman loons under our yellow sun. First off it is important to remember that this is not a mere telling of Superman. It is a RETELLING. Which means they can tell it how they want. 10 years is an awesome run. I myself have never missed an episode. So I have seen all the lame episodes. (Yes, there are episodes that even I do not like.) Like “Asylum” IDIOOOOTIC!!! Season 10 has been awesome for me, because I saw the two seasons before it. Personally, I think they should have rewarded loyal fans with an entire final season with Clark as Superman. As far as the Jimmy Olsen thing? I knew from the beginning that it was not going to be the same Jimmy. Then they killed him off and referred to him as Henry James Olsen and gave his little brother his camera. I knew then that “Jimmy” was Henry’s brother. In fact, all the way up to season 7 I was able to predict everything they were going to do on the show. They switched directions. Which is a good thing! It is time for it to end though. I have really enjoyed it! Damn what anyone else thinks!

  10. this show has sucked since its beginning, first of all, its on a station that has all crappy shows, so even if it is the highest rated show on that station (which its not) its still terrible. you can tell they just make stuff up as they go. they really didint expect it to go past season 1, so they had to just drag out everything. there is no entertainment, and it seems everything is the way it was in season 10 as in season 1! nothing happens!!!they just get older!

    Comment by brian tuttle — February 3, 2011 @ 10:27 am

    • There’s a reason why this show lasted so long. Even some shows on better networks get cut off after the first season. Just because you don’t see it fit doesn’t mean you get to say it sucked since the beginning. It is an awesome show and I think its ratings, fans, and air-time has proven it. There is nothing wrong with an old show as long as it satisfies the majority. Smallville is about teaching the good morals and responsibilities of individuals. As long as the show did that justice to Superman, there is no reason to bluntly say this show sucked from the beginning. Plus, who are you to judge?

      Comment by Crakersandcheeze — February 6, 2013 @ 10:31 pm

making up a script as you go isnt quality.. all they do is this: and then… and then… and then… what if… and then… i think the actors write the show, because its about as deep as some lame “C” star actors thoughts

  13. funny, was google searching why season 10 sucks so bad.
how can anyone defend this show?
nothing is happening at all during this season, such a waste.
compare it to a show like supernatural, and you can see such a difference in quality.
i used to watch this show, and then stopped once lana got powers. started watching again once i heard about the justice league and doomsday.
i only watch now for the same reason i watched the last season of lost, don’t want to feel like i wasted all that time without at least finishing the series off.
but again, this show is horrible, watching the bachelor party one right now, and my god, is it bad.
halfway through the final season and nothing is happening.

    Comment by ivan — February 26, 2011 @ 5:53 am

  14. This has to be the worst final season for any show. Smallville has gotten worse and worse for the many reasons already stated plus so many more. But the thing I can not understand is why they waist episode after episode on fluff, stupidity, comedic situations, and just repeating stories and triangles over and over again.

With a handful of episodes left you would think they could write a decent story arch and end what had been a good show on an epic level.

But I can’t even watch anymore.

    Comment by David — March 2, 2011 @ 4:04 pm

  15. Your an idiot, who is way too analytical of the show, and who thinks way too much about the story. You would be the dumb as# at the movies who complains about everything in the movie. I truly hate people like you. Just watch the damn show, and shut up!

      • yeah exactly.before coming to metropolis and working for the daily planet, clark NEVER heard of any lex luthor, and in the series they’re fucking friends?i’d want to meet the guy who came up with the WHOLE idea of smallville and assassinate him by forcing him to listen to rebecca black’s friday over and over again.

        Comment by smallvillesucks — April 15, 2011 @ 6:24 am

        • Ahh, no I mean they were. In the silver age comics Superboy (young Superman) and Lex were friends, with Superboy causing Lex to go bald which is why they became enemies. I actually thought Smallville handled that aspect rather well, having Clark indirectly cause it simply by landing on earth.

  20. I just finished watching the episode “Dominion” with Callum Blue, which wasn’t fuckin sucked balls! I do agree with what a lot people have said on here. I wished they would have made season 8 a little better with the Doomsday plot. The season 8 finale’s final fight between Clark and Doomsday lasted 2 minutes :(. Season 9 plot was retarded, hated the whole season. Callum Blue sucked as the main villain. I was also excited to hear that Darkseid would be the major villain for season 10, but he’s only been in four episodes (lasting a brief 2 seconds in each one) of the entire season, minus the last two episodes which haven’t aired. The whole government thing was stupid, the girl who plays Cat Grant is fuckin retarded! They could have made Smallville’s last season so much better, instead they wasted money, and more importantly our time on stupid shit, like Lois turning into Isis, Vigilante Restriction Act (which could have been sweet, if they didn’t waste fucking 10 episodes on it!), fuckin gay ass high school musical dude playin lex’s clone, fuckin Hangover episode… I wished they would have focused more on Clark and company dealing with Darkseid’s minions, which they only did in three episodes. Even though Chloe’s lines were sometimes off the wall and stupid, I liked her the best, which pissed me off when she decided not to become a regular. Out of all the actors she is the best. I am just praying that they do a good job on the finale. Hopefully Darkseid will appear more than 2 seconds of the show.

  21. This show is awesome. I own every season. I do wish that the Doomsday battle would have been more epic but the humanization of a great villain like a Doomsday was awesome in it’s own right. They turned Doomsday from purely just a comic book character into truly a human being, I liked the show MUCH better from season 6 and on then I did before. They used real characters from the DC Universe which I liked.

I missed Pete he was the only coolest (token black guy) and they got rid of him he felt like a friend of mine, I dont like it when they use the same actors like lana and clark for past tense 1950’s grandparents. I hate love triangle relationships that go on and off. Theres a few I dont like which should end up on supernatural instead of smallville. I dont hate smallville I’m still catching up to episodes that I havent seen yet, but just like anime with fillers theres too much to watch without having something unnecessary something I feel they do only to meet deadlines or fill an arc.

    • I finished watching Smallville wtf happened? After season 7 when Lex leaves after the ‘traveler’ veritas plot everything went to shit with the villains they were done poorly or were clones, like doomsday and darkseid became useless material in the end and lex and zod were clones. And they had to bring the actors of Lionel and Jimmy back but as different characters this time. They should of not replace Lex with Tess and I heard that Lex return for season 10 but he was only in the finale in the last few mins and even then he was a clone so the original Lex is dead. Killing Tess at the last minute was a cheap shot it should of happened sooner. Cloned Zod was overdone with british accent “I am ZOD! kneel before me” was laughable he doesnt look or act the part. The beginning of the finale was terrible with The Village, Hangover, Vigilante Registration Act, Lois with superpowers and ended on a short note superman can fly and wears glasses but the whole time they kept calling him “The Blur” change the nickname at least.

I dont mind checkmate, suicide squad, brainiac, metallo, John Jones, blue beetle, booster gold and the JSA but they didnt use them in the finale but they overdid with green arrow. Clark as Ultraman was entertaining, Chloe as a mom reading a smallville comic to her child was weird

  27. Smallville was truly great early in the series, when the premier cast in particularly Michael Rosenbaum and John Glovers were a part of the cast there acting along with there dialogue meshed together perfectly. Getting rid of these two left the series inevitably limping along, while the writers attempted to forge a formidable nemesis out of thin air. Not to mention Jonathon Kent who unfortunately also leaves to early in the series. I know that reaching that pivotal point in Clarks life where he rips his shirt and unveils his destiny is absolutely needed(perfect finale) I would’ve hoped they had went about it a different way. Rather than show us awful episodes of the man of steel fighting crime with other cape crusaders in metropolis, which by the way left me unsatisfied and yearning for the old trio of Clark, Chloe, and even Pete. I really had hoped more than anything that they had done more in Smallville the series got a little to factitious for me when they moved to metropolis its as if the soul and heart reside back home. The high school drama, Clarks progressive learning, the friendship with Lex, development of his powers, humble relationships in the early seasons is what i believe make this show so appealing and loveable.

  31. Your opinion is your opinion, but a bad one at that. First of all, if lex was cloned. He’d be bald, because the genetic material is the same. Same damaged gene’s. Making him bald. Clark cannot fly because he is still leading how and has a fear of heights. Explaining why he doesn’t want to even learn how to fly. Also, the show was filmed in Canada, which they didn’t have enough space or actual towns to film. He’s not an “emo blur” tell me. What’s more noticeable, running around at night with red and blue in. Highly populated city, or running around in black in a highly populated city? Exactly. Green Arrow now. Would you really, wait pretty much a whole season on green arrows training? No, which is much easier to make it 2 months instea of a year, compacting it into one season. Chl

    Comment by Jacob C. — June 3, 2012 @ 7:10 pm

  33. I am halfway thru season 9. Smallville sucks. The original creators may have lacked DC villians, but the show actually had depth to it. And they balanced fanservice and genuine creativity. Everything past season 7 is predictable. The only unpredictable parts is when they do something ferociously stupid. Everything is rushed, everything is lame, there is no depth, and nothing sticks. I was glad to see the villian of the week formula evolve to filler and bridge tools to keep main plots going….but is this better. OMG! Lex Luthor can control superman!!! Damn, for some reason Clark has just gone to Russia (no explanation), and has ONCE AGAIN lost his fucking powers. Oh wait, they are back next episode. Metallo! No fight? Already beaten? Okay. JSA. Mildly interesting. Lois can’t act, Clark and Lois’s relationship is boring. Chloe is turning into an evil slut who I sympathize for because she is surrounded by fucking idiots. Where are the other heroes? Why is Tess still alive? Zod is annoying. Doomsday was gay. Doomsday was gay. Doomsday was gay. Jimmy….really? Lana was pointless, and a bitch, and a cunt. I miss Lionel. Oliver has no right to be called Green Arrow. He is a loser, plain and simple. They killed Lex. What the fucking fuck did they do that for? STOP TIME TRAVELING. This is overused and utterly lame and retarded. Most of the episodes are boring, there is no humor. Lois can’t act (I know I already said this, just repeating for effect). The music sucks now that the original creators are gone. Green Arrow’s apprentice hardly shows her face. Why did they do that to Pete? What the fuck happened to Isis? Every time it seems like the show is going to take a risk, it backsteps: I am going to befriend Zod and lead the Kandorians. He helped two of them and is always squaring off and threatening Zod. Watchtower should be more like family…on second thought, let me keep spying on them from afar except for whenever I need booty call. Lana Lang is dead. No she’s not. Lana Lang is gone. Bring her back. Lex is alive. Kill him. Lois and Clark are in a relationship. Let’s make them mutually afraid to take it anywhere. Chloe loves Doomsday. No she doesn’t. Doomsday can be saved. No he can’t. Clark might still be controlled by Lex who is coming back. Um. Nah. Clark is embracing his heritage. For some inexplicable reason he is head over heels for Louis to the point of backstepping that too, emphasis on WHY. EVERYTIME the season finale reveals something major….that major change ends before the premier episode for the next season does. And if they had a very kinetic opening episode, that would be okay, if it ended with another major change that needed to be resolved or overcome or mastered for the new season, that would be useful, add a sense of direction. The don’t. Never, at all. So essentially the finales and opening don’t really matter. At all. Fact: The original authors would’ve eventually gotten to more DC universe. They already were with Brainiac, and Bizzaro, and Martian Manhunter, and Kara(I miss you). And without a doubt, they would’ve done a better job than this shit.

Now dumping on the whole show in general: Fighting: the only good fights on this show are with the women. Every fight Clark is in is anticlimactic. Period. Why do I watch this show? I always hated Superman. Watching this show is painful, so painful it actually releases endorphines, my hate releases adrenaline. I am addicted to both. Clark Kent is so unfathomably retarded, clueless, hypocritical and immature–he makes me feel better about myself and the world around me. And it is infectious, somehow they have leveled the playing field and brought everyone associated with Clark down to his level. Even Chloe Sullivan, whom I have lost respect for. But I still respect her more than ANYONE in this craptastic show. Thank god they got Jensen Ackles back to his own show before they ruined his image further. I love Supernatural, I imagine Jensen for the sake of sanity and to avoid a sinking burning ship begged for his character to die meaninglessly. Yes, that is it, this show full of crappy plotlines, horrible “romance”, and actors who can’t act make everything seem so much better : )! Thus, I rescind my statement. Smallville is a miracle on-screen. The best show ever. I do so hope they bring Braniac back a 6th or 7th time! So he can fail, again. Beaten by overdramatic morons! I would kill myself every time I found myself alive. My favorite recurring scenario from this show:

*Warning, a drawn out Clark bash-athon*

“Clark don’t do that, it is a bad idea.” “You are my friend! You are supposed to trust me!” *bad idea explodes in his face* “Why didn’t you tell me that was a bad idea!” “I did.” “You obviously don’t care like I do! Me am running away now!” *things get worse* “This….this…is ….somebody else’s fault….they have betrayed me, and abandoned me when I needed them the most!” Jor-El “my son, PLEASE finish your training! Please! You might even be able to fly if you do. And everything that I have done I warned you before hand–” “YOU ARE NOT MY FATHER! I’m running away!!!!!” *later on* “Anonymity is our best defence!” “Now stand back as I save Metropolis with NO mask, by causing millions of dollars worth of destruction just in time for me to have another phone conversation with Louis which is a secret. BUT DON’T YOU DARE HAVE ANY SECRETS FROM ME! I will tell her everything and nothing for I am a genius who never messes up. I am sure this voice transmitter will never fail. I am sure she will never realize who I am. I am sure I wont say something I shouldn’t have, I am sure her being my sole contact won’t put her in harms way. I am the only person who can do these things because I am more cautious than ANY OF YOU! What!?! Tess has my dad? I’ll KILL HER!!!!!!!!!!No Arrow, you stay here, you are a murderer. Chloe you are useless, that is why I never say thank you, and I always assume you are screwing me over despite having to pick up the pieces of my constant blunders and having saved me more times that I am even capable of counting. My own mother never visits me or even calls, but you do everything to help me and all I do is chew you out, you help me, and I glare at you and warn you never to go behind my back. Look at my stupid overused expression, listen to me while I walk slowly away from you and search for fireflies….and….SUPERSPEEDAWAY! HAHAHA! YOU WEREN’T DONE TALKING YET! In head: (that sure was a great idea that I thought of and Chloe repeated back to me–if only she was as smart as I was, maybe she’d be trustworthy; *sigh*, stupid Chloe). Let me go screw something else up for John Jones to cover for me, and I can go meet various ppl and tell them horribly pathetic lies that they are going to believe anyways because I am so dreamy. I love being me!)

And in reality, the new creators actually dumbed down Clark’s stupidity. But now Clark doesn’t really DO much of anything either. He fawns over Louis who doesn’t even really seem that into him. Which is why when Chloe and her dead husband were like “everyone sees how you look at each other”, I was like….um….like they don’t know what they want to do? At all? Ever? As for the REALLY bad guys? Chloe finds out how to stop them, Arrow gathers what is needed to stop them. They call in Clark. Clark almost fucks up or does fuck up and gets saved by John Jones or somebody other. When he gets lucky and does what should’ve been easy for him to do…something worse always comes of it. He truly is his own worst enemy. Wow, guess that DOES make him human doesn’t it?

PS: You are right, this IS me venting. I don’t care what anybody thinks really (tho it would be fun to watch the reactions–I don’t change my opinions easily, so it will only be for my amusement). I did this for me, feel free to take what you want from it. Agree, disagree. I’m going to finish this show because I have wasted this much of my time hoping it would get better. I stopped hoping that after like, the first few episode of season 6. But I kept watching because it was at least hilarious. Then that stopped too. I just have see this show to its final fail moment. Because that is what a true fan does. They endure the pain, and find something good about a show, even when they know it sucks. And I consider myself, and honest, if awkward fan.

  35. I think the main problem with Smallville was that Clark spent way too much time as himself, which jepordized his chance of ever beginning his life long mission as his crime fighting alter ego. This was partly because he went too long without donning the glasses. I mean, even on Superboy, the writers knew how important the glasses were, to hide the fact that Clark was Superman. Another major part of Clark’s disguise was clumsiness, which unless I’m mistaken, he didn’t seem to show very much of in Smallville, while in other versions of Superman, it’s been displayed perfectly by people such as Christopher Reeve in the Superman movies and Gerard Christopher in Superboy. If those qualities are not involved then there is no Superman, because everyone will recognize him as Clark, because he has no disguise, for goodness sake!

  37. They really did mess it up, big time and it went downhill ever since lex had a overnight change which was terribly done, they mis represented superman and dc universe, Thr fact he has glasses for around 3 episodes is completely ridiculous let’s be logical by that rate if was in a superman suit half his work colleagues would recognise him instantaneously, also the whole Lionel resurrecting lex via his parallel universe origins was incredibly flawd along with the many lex clones the show was entertaining but it mocked the comics not in a Nolan way of bending the rules accordingly but they destroyed superman as a franchise louis and Clark adventures was much more grounded

    Comment by Skittles — October 1, 2012 @ 8:26 am

  38. 1) Yes Chloe’s dialogue seems unrealistic to how people usually speak but this is what makes her unique in her own way. I’m guessing the writers did this because she was not in the comics and wanted to add something to her character.

    2) The AI is Kryptonian and the Kryptonian race is for more advanced than the human race

    3) I agree with you on this one because it just seems the writers just wanted to include less “real time” scenes

    4) HIs ability to fly came with time when he was ready to truly accept his destiny. Yes it took much longer than it should have and when they gave him the ability to fly it was horrible effects.

    5) Well I honestly do not see how even in the comics a pair of glasses hides his identity from people he works with but you are right about people in Smallville recognizing him but he didn’t really talk to a lot of people if you think about it.

    6) You are correct. That’s all I have to say about this

    7) Once again writers just wanted to burn up time to fill the episode

    8) I don’t know much about the Green Arrow, other than what I saw on Smallville and on the new show Arrow, so I really can’t say anything about this

    9) Jimmy said he was really James Olsen when he met clark but I believe that’s the only time so if fans didn’t catch that it was a big upset

    10) He just changed because of his huge mistake causing James to die

    11) Right again

    12) And again

    13) Lex has to be brought back. He is Superman’s main enemy.

First of all I’m not like other fans that say you suck because you do not like my show because, well we all have our own opinions right. Now personally I liked Smallville. Yes it came with its share of bad plots and episodes but overall i think it was a good show. I also liked it was on for so long but do believe the writers should have ended the series earlier on. The ending however, i believe should have been done way better. I mean yes they are not going to have Clark fight Doomsday’s true form but the action scenes just were horrible IN MY OPINION. I could see where you are coming from though because I could see by the way you explained how you would not like it. Maybe you’ll give it a second chance one day maybe not, but it is your opinion so you could just say what you want about the show

    Comment by Junior — December 18, 2012 @ 5:02 pm

    • I thought Jimmy just called himself James to try and look more manly in front of Clark. After he said he was James Olsen, Chloe even made the comment of since when. But whatever, if you want you can explain away any inconsistencies, unfortunately I don’t have that ability, and there are way too many of them in Smallville.

She may not look anything like Lana, but she totally made up for it with heart and soul. She was very sweet, lovable, sensitive, super cute and even funny at times. And despite her innocence, she could still kick butt if she had to. I still love her to this day. So all you Lana haters lay off. She’s not as bad as she’s made out to be.

  41. Conner Kent was the coolest character on the show, for me. It was nice to see him in live action for the first time. I mean, Smallville would truly be nothing without Superboy, even though it was just the teenage clone of Superman, and not the teenage incarnation of Superman himself. As much as I like the original Superboy, the Conner Kent version still satisfied me.

  43. I stopped watching after the first 4 or 5 episodes. I always wondered why they didn’t instead make a young Bruce Wane show. Bruce and Alfred travel all over the world. Bruce is getting trained by expers learning all the skills he needs later on. Each story arc he encounters some criminal element in whatever new place he is getting trained, and uses some of his skills to fix the problem/bring the antagonist to justice before moving on to the next locale where a new expert trains him a new skill. Each story could be a 3 episode 3 act story arc with an undisclosed ammount of time passing between the episodes; we dont want it to seem like it only takes him a week to learn a new skill.

Bruce doesn’t always get his training from goood guys. For instance, he may seek out the best dude there is a lockpicking or safecracking because that could be very useful to him. but other episodes he might learn slight of hand techniques and the behind the scenes engineering from a magician to help him better conceal all those gadgets, and vanish, etc. the possibilites are endless. The show would have been easier and cheaper to make as well since they wouldn’t need as much of an FX budget because there would be not super powers. This show would appeal to a much wider audience as well since there would be no super heroes, it’s just a dedicated handsome young millionaire seeking out all the skills he will need to bring justice to Gotham. There wouldnt be a lot of stepping on the toes of continuity obsessed Batman fans, as far as my knowledge goes there is not a ton of stories outlining this time in Bruces life (besides it’s a TV show with it’s own identity).

Anyway, what do you guys think? As a concept would that have been a better show than Smallville?

    Comment by Kris — February 1, 2013 @ 10:38 am

    • Yes, it would have. And it, NOT Smallville, should have been made.

For myself, the only episode of this show I liked was the one in which Christopher Reeve played Dr. Swann, the eccentric, Stephen Hawking-like scientist who tells Clark that he traced the trajectory of Clark’s ship from Krypton to Earth, and knows where it is in the galaxy-I only found out about that episode because I watched the Entertainment Tonight story about it. Both this show and Lois & Clark were clunkers of the first order.

Why is it that Warner Bros. Television can’t/couldn’t just make a Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman TV show like the comic book instead of this kind of show? They were able to make a show out of the Flash, and it worked better than Smallville-what gave in these two instances? Next time, they should just leave the making of superhero shows to the animation division, or just to the movie division if all they can do is come up with mediocre Dawson’s Creek/Roswell clones like Smallville based on a nebulous bullshit idea that the public wouldn’t like a straight superhero show.

About the Bruce Wayne/Batman prequel show-I’d accept it IF in the final episodes/season he come home and becomes Batman (with a title change to reflect the new reality)-that woulds indeed make it better than Smallville.

  45. For a bunch ppl that hate the show sure have a lot to say about it lol. Simple put if you don’t like it dont watch it dont try to distroy the show for everyone else. I personally wanted more out of it meaning a 11th season BUT SMALLVILLE ISN’T ABOUT SUPER MAN ITS ABOUT CLARK KENT AND HIS JOURNEY TO BEING SUPERMAN. WHEN YOU ACCEPT THAT AND STOP EXPECTING THING YOU’VE SEEN IN THE ORIGINAL SUPERMAN SHOW YOU’LL REALIZE THIS IS PRETTY AMAZING.

  46. I don’t necessarily have a problem with Smallville itself. I just can’t stand when so many fans of the show compare it to the more major versions of Superman, such as the iconic movies with Christopher Reeve, the animated series from the 90s, and the live action Superboy series from 88-92. It’s just not right for those awsome classics to be compared to the “Superman series without Superman”. Just saying.

I thought what you said about Chloe’s hacker talk was a solid idea and you used a good example of how she talked from the show and you’re right, nobody really speaks that way. If you want to state a valid argument, you need more facts/evidence and not a list of complaints.

  54. Personally, I think S1 was the best season of the show. Great character development, Clark was likeable and more Superman-esque. Like in Leech when he puts his life on the line to stop Eric and says he’d stop people like him, etc.. Not to mention all the great one liners and foreshadowing. I also really enjoy S3 and S2 with S4 growing on me with each viewing.

I think the show should have ended after five seasons and then used the series finale to hint at a Metropolis spin off. Imagine a new gritty dark Superman show that had elements of Lois and Clark we loved minus the camp and cheesy FX. Way more preferable to Clana drama, Lex and Lana, Clexana triangle, and a ton of useless intros from characters who are supposed to come in AFTER Superman is introduced. The series finale SUCKED IMO.

    Comment by Ryan — January 5, 2014 @ 12:22 am

  55. First- do you actially know any halfway decent hackers? They pride themselves on speed, lingo, and staying off of the grid.
Second- Clark started addressing his fear of heights in season 1, guess you should start watching the first 4 seasons you said you’ve missed.
Third- the point of the glasses (as stated by Lois in season 10) isn’t particularly so no one will recognize Clark as the blur, however to deter anyone from thinking that someone who looks so “nerdy” and is so clumsy could possibly be “the man of steel”.
Fourth- Green Arrow was stuck on a desert island for years, yes years, when his yachting accident washed him and pieces of the expensive yacht ashore. That’s when he made his own bow and arrow set in order to keep himself fed and safe. This is explained when he was poisoned ( I believe it was season 7) and had flashbacks of the island, honing his archery skills, and meeting Tess Mercer.
Fifth- I agree with you 100% on the Jimmy Olsen thing. WTF?!
Sixth- Dressing im all black is meant to symbolize Kal-el losing Lois and giving up his “Earthly” emotions and friends in order to start training with Jor-el.
Seventh- In my opinion of course, the Kandorian plot was wonderful, very entertaining. I mean the best mimds and military leaders and personnel of Krypton are cloned, in case anything happened to Krypton (ie-the destruction of the planet) so they could rebuild their race on another planet! This makes perfect sense to me….
Lastly- Lex Luther (Rosenbaum) came back because he is said to be Clark’s, or Superman’s, grratest enemy. This was forst said after interpreting the drawings in the cave (seasom 2 I believe).
*Personally I enjoyed all 10 seasons of Smallville, although the villan of the week thimg got old fast. Just remember some things like the Jimmy Olsen thing and Doomsday scenarios, are purely meant for entertainment value. It’s a TV show, and as you’ve stated, one with a low budget…..

  60. I love that show, acting is great, effects are great and also stories are mostly very good, specially if you compare it with other similar series ! Not all tv show have to be Twin Peaks, altough Smallville have on its own a lot of very good artistic scenes. Only flaw is there is too much emotional soap opera, but this is nicely balanced with other scenes ! Tom Welling did a marvelous job as depicting young Clark Kent slowly turning into Superman. Also I love music in this show, there are so many alternative rock and pop/rock catchy songs which I othervise would be forget about and they nicely blend with appropriate scenes. I also love the idea how normal people in creative and interesting ways got their powers thanks to meteor rocks which falled from the space along with Super child on town of Smallville and surrounding area. Whenever I was in bad mood or frustrated I always watched Smallville and it always managed to uplift my mood and I felt great after watching it. We are having so much great Tv shows available, specially since 2000`s and our ancestors didnt have this entertainment and internet with all fun along with it, so they ofen gathered at friends or relatives homes to watch movies or their favorite shows, so gatherings like those were combo of family and friends parties, where food was enjoyed along with music, conversations and peak of evening was watching Tv, cause many people didnt have colour Tv, so watching tv shows etc got people together. And people were grateful and cheerful just to had chance to watch tv shows, so they never complained. But today we have so much free entertainment available that we dont appreciate all this anymore, we are like rich man` spoiled little son, who is annoying brat not grateful for anything in life, and we are similar with all comforts and pleasures available…So often those not grateful loose things in life, they loose relations, material comforts, even health –its like some supreme Intlligence would teach them to appreciate all this again, by losing it ! So such spoiled mind, spoiled with too much comfort and fun and pleasures in life available very easily, while ancestors had to work hard for their comfort and pleasures and entertainment, this spoiled immature mind creates all this superficial complaining and such sick mind doesnt allow you to enjoy life anymore, instead to see biger picture and what all you have in life, you are focused on dust on window instead of seeing Sun behind this window, no lets watch small dust particles instead. I think I made it clear why I consider superficial whining and focusing on small things rather than seeing vastness behind, say the least foolish and immature. And this is being done on this blog. Smallville is really beautifuly crafted story of young Superman, spiced with all high school charming stories, filled with creative effects, great acting, supreme storyline etc –all in all so much fun, pleasure, comfort, joy etc for UNSPOILED MIND. Yes If you cannot enjoy show like Smallville, which is pure fun, really pure fun and nothing else, to watch and available for FREE, then surely your mind is obviously spoiled and focused on small dust particles. It would be good cure to send you to Africa to live in village where they have no modern society comforts for couple of years or to some strict discipline Ashram where you would have to meditate 4 hours each day and rest of the day do service whatever they ask you to do, for little food and bed ! Maybe after couple of years living like that you will appreciate comforts and pleasures we have available, including Smallville ! Sorry for my bad english and all writing mistakes ! Also this post was not by any means meant to insult, but rather waking call, to become aware how much joys and bliss and happiness we miss in life if we are guided by easy comforts spoiled small mind, instead of experiencing and seeing vastness, richness, joys and bliss of life beyond that mind. Peace & Love

    • Aww, did someone attack your precious Smallville, and now you’re a little butthurt? Get over it. I’m glad that the show made you feel good, and all that, but all I get from it is frustration. What do you live vicariously through Clark or something? Because I don’t see how anyone else would be able to enjoy it otherwise. Clark is nothing but a hypocrite, and Tom Welling never should have been cast in the role. Your opinion is biased because you liked it. Mine is because I hated it. Having an opinion doesn’t make you spoiled. What great TV shows since 2000 are you referring to exactly? TV today sucks, and has for a long time! The fact that you can’t see that just goes to show how deluded you truly are. Also, what free entertainment are you referring to? Last time I checked the internet wasn’t free, TV isn’t free. Smartphones aren’t free. I think all that meditation has gone to your head. What right do you have to call anyone else spoiled? What, you think you’re not? We all are, but people can hate a show without forgetting that there was once a time when the luxury of TV didn’t exist. And you honestly think people back then never complained? Are you that dense? They had things a lot harder than we do today, which is a fact I have been reminded of more than once. They worked hard, and most rarely had anything to show for it. Of course they complained! I don’t get my enjoyment and pleasure out of a TV show. I have a life, and people who love me. That’s where my joy and pleasure comes from. Not from a meaningless TV show. Just because someone doesn’t enjoy Smallville doesn’t mean they’re not capable of joy and pleasure. I think you’re the one who needs the wake up call. Good riddance. Enjoy your so-called enlightenment, and I’ll continue to enjoy the real world.

  61. I see that this post is several years old, but I feel the need to respond nonetheless. Smallville does suck. More so than I ever would have thought possible. I’ve only made it through Season 5, and I swear I don’t know if I’m going to be able to finish. The only reason I ever gave the show a chance was because I love Superman, and felt I owed it to myself to see if this show lived up to the hype. IMO it doesn’t even come close to the worship it receives. I have never seen a version of Superman where I literally hated every single thing about him. Tom Welling is a sorry excuse for Clark Kent, and the writing on this show makes it a thousand times worse. This Clark is such a hypocritical douche bag who walks around with this smugness about him that just makes me want to punch him in his face. Sorry, but he’s not as gorgeous as HE seems to think he is. I never thought he looked the part of Clark Kent, and I still don’t. My patience has been wearing thin since Season 2, and I honestly don’t know if my love for Superman will be able to sustain me through the rest of the show. This guy is no Clark Kent. He can lie, cheat, steal, and basically do whatever he wants because he thinks he knows what’s best for everybody even if they never asked for his input in the first place. I don’t know why the other characters put up with him. Super powers or not this is no person I could ever be friends with. The way he acts like he has this claim on everyone in his life makes me hate him even more, especially when it comes to Lana. Not only that, but he acts like the world revolves around him. Take Chloe for instance. Clark knew he was in love with him, and almost seemed to get off on the idea. It made me sick. Of course it’s not surprising that he poses a god complex with the way everyone insists on inflating his already over inflated ego with words of encouragement. Most of his problems, especially when it comes to Lex and Lana are of his own making. People can only take so many lies before they eventually turn on you. All Clark does is lie to people he supposedly cares about to protect his precious little secret, then freaks out and goes all holier-than-thou when someone lies to him. As far as I’m concerned he brought all the bad stuff on himself. What’s worse is how this show tries to paint him as a saint, always pointing out how good and true he is when he is NONE of those things, but he’s Clark Kent so you just have to accept it. Aside from Clark himself the recycling of actors is ridiculous. I lost count of how many people appeared in multiple roles. However the casting choice that bugs me the most is the case of Aaron and Shawn Ashmore. One plays Jimmy Olsen, the other some meteor freak from one of the earlier seasons, but the point is they are identical twins, and Jimmy Olsen is a pretty prominent character. Why the hell would they cast somebody from an earlier season’s twin brother to play such an important character? It’s like they think the audience is too stupid to notice. This show also took way too many liberties with the source material. What could have been a faithful retelling of Clark Kent’s early years, instead chose to rewrite everything, and turn the stomach of this loyal Superman fan. Tom Welling is not, and never will be Clark Kent, and his Clark is not, and never will be Superman.

  62. This thread is very old, but I just felt this need to point out that you were wrong about a few things.
1 ) The show DID adress him not flying pretty much every other episode? Clark already started flying in season 2 as his ‘kal el’ counterpart. He’s flown on multiple occasions since. It has been fully adressed that he cannot fly because of his own mentality and fear. The show explains this in simulations within the fortress and with Kara way earlier on in the show.
2 ) Where the hell did you get the arrow’s 2 months thing? Oliver clearly, very clearly, said “I’ve been stuck on this island for 2 years” when saving Tess Mercer, and then some times after it (once to clark from memory)
3 ) Rosenbaum did come back in the finale, but fair is fair, you couldn’t have known before it aired.
4 ) The glasses made sense to me, because clark (doing his super thing) always tried to stay out of sight being the blur. I don’t think the smallville logic applies here, since it’s BS anyway.
5 ) I agree about Chloe’s way of talking on the one hand. It bugs me to no end, sometimes. HOWEVER, it also adds a lot if you ask me. Chloe speaks in ‘comic book speak’. She’s basically saying what you usually read in kid’s comics. I feel like it… adds character. But you’re right, sometimes she’s just… cringeworthy. But, to that extend, I’ll never think of smallville as a well-scripted show… as in, the way they talk. Clark Kent is the most lame character ever. Whenever I heard him talk I almost fell asleep. Really, the only very interesting characters (IMO!) to actually hear speaking were Jonathan Kent and Lex Luthor. Maybe Lionel as well. In some way, when they spoke it just didn’t feel as stiff and rehearsed as it did when clark/chloe/lana spoke.
OH– not to forget, justin heartly (or however you write his name) played an amazing green arrow! I still think that for his role in smallville he played it out perfectly. (Sure as hell wouldn’t want him in the new batman-like CW arrow, though)

  64. YESSSS, FINALLY!! Someone that is a true fan of superman and a true reviewer. I totally understand, relate and share your view, because this is exactly what I see!! The points you made is what I have been saying for a long time. I was a big fan of small ville in my early teen years, while attending middle and highschool. I was a huge follower, while hoping to see him fly. Unfortunately I didn’t get to make it that far, it was dragged, went away from superman’s actual story as if it was filled with fillers. And life took its course. Came back later and gave my wife a series to watch since heroes let her down. Wow to my surprise what a big mistake I made. I was finished with it after season 1, she still going on to season 9!! But no surprise the reason why people will defend it soo much, the reason why this show is a successful failure is the same reason why Hollywood continues to make bs movies and recycle them over and over . People today are blind, and bored and will feed on anything and just be satisfied. I’m glad there is breaking bad, the wire, the strain, and now Gotham which I will be taking a look at.idk why after soo many years I went back to look at small ville, trying to rekindled a childhood. Smh. The writers didn’t even try. And funny how Jimmy dies and they didn’t even follow up after his funeral with a realistic emotional state from Chloe, the entire show just moved on as if he didnt exist

    Comment by Omar Robinson — October 6, 2016 @ 8:32 am

    • Remember Alicia Baker ? Clarks girlfriend from season 4 ? The writers killed her off and basically forgot she ever existed. Clark is seen laughing and joking in the next episode like nothing happened. He found her hanging from a rope ! That’s something that should have traumatized Clark for years.

  65. I’m a massive fan of superman but this show portrayed him as so weak. The Lana story line should have ended seasons ago, like after high school, and should not have been drawn out to season 7. Clark not being able to fly, without an excuse as to why, was a poorly written plot line. Chloe being able to hack like she can is a typical cringe worthy aspect most shows have for their hackers. Lex being able to survive a bullet to the head makes me want to smack my own head against a brick wall. This show made superman very weak compared to the movie and original comics. Most of the scenes are poorly written, the show looks like it had a tiny budget and didn’t even try. Lois’ character was well done, supergirl needed a better actress and Lex should have died long ago. They started Lex’s character off well but then they stopped developing him and just made him annoying as fuck. This entire series needed better writers, and over all I was disappointed in watching it. Clark needed some balls, instead he was weak, and spent far too much time with his head up Lana’s ass to do anything else.

That’s probably because Sesame Street is the only show you can comprehend (if you’re able to understand that.) Instead of commenting on shows that is to complex for you go back to Spongebob. Smallville and Supernatural are THE TWO BEST shows period.

  68. Your points are well taken and I definitely agree. This is exactly what happens when someone gets the idea to remake an old idea. They usually don’t have the same vision as the creator, They are often driven by social political agendas. They make changes for the sake of making changes, trying to distance themselves from the original. They don’t understand the characters, so often cast people who are terrible for the role. They think CGI or unorthodox camera shots can replace well written stories. The solution? Encourage networks and Hollywood to come up with some new original stories and quit remaking the old ones. The entire premise for Superman/Superboy were originally directed to young kids and the unsophisticated, so they used really corny characters. C’mon, how can you make a serious drama about someone called Super. Taking away his glasses or his power of flight will never remove the stigma of character himself. That would be like trying to remake the Three Stooges in our modern times. The Stooges should remain in the depression era and Superboy should remain between the yellow pages of my childhood comics. To take them out of context creates a new character, so you might as well give him a new name.

  69. Your points are trash, even now, this show is one of the best DC shows out there. Every show has its downs and ups, but overall it was good…and just because you are too dense to understand the concepts don’t try convincing others its a bad show.

Like for instance, the whole Clark not flying thing, for starters the show was very clear why Clark Kent was earthbound, this was explained in Crusade, when Kal-El could fly, its not the shows fault you aren’t intelligent enough to understand it. The reason Clark couldn’t fly, is flight is the symbol of embracing his destiny and kryptonian side. Because until season 10, Clark fought that side of him and wanted a normal life and rejected his Kryptonian Side, this was also explained in season 9 directly by Jor-El…

  70. Smallville is a laughable soap opera with mediocre music that has repetitively watered down lyrics. Lex Luthor, Lionel Luthor, Chloe Sullivan, and Jason Teague were the saving graces in this show to some extent. Once Jason Teague, Lex Luthor, and Lionel Luthor stopped being in episodes regularly, this show became a shadow of itself. Clark and Lois were in a rushed relationship. The transition from being Clark Kent to Superman took a LONG time. We only get to see Superman in the series finale for this show when Clark starts flying. High school drama nonsense in Smallville was SO cliché. Most of the villains were hilariously ridiculous in this show except for Lex Luthor, Lionel Luthor, Jason Teague, and a few others. Hollywoodising this show ruined it for me. Everything in Smallville was created for the masses rather than intellectuals specifically. It’s why dialogue, character development, vocabulary, villains, and protagonists have all been watered down substantially. All of the thirsty fangirls making fanfics don’t impress me.
