Australians in the UK

It seems to me that the majority of Australians who end up going to the UK to work are bogans. Bogan is the Australians version of a redneck, chav, ned or knacker. I don’t know if it’s just my personal experience but it seems like whenever I go to the UK and Ireland all the Australians are people who saved up money from social security to get over there and then work minimum wage jobs just so they can buy all the cheap drugs and alcohol they can afford. They tend to be very loud and rowdy and tend to turn a lot of people away.

Many British and Irish people I speak to get the impression that these Australians are a representation of most Australians, which I think is interesting. If it’s true why are so many bogan Australians going to the UK? If little work and cheap drugs and partying is what is desired why not head to South-East Asia or Latin America. What is it that attracts the bogan types to the UK? Why so prevalently?

  1. Well I may have some answers to the last question :
Australians do go to south-east Asia, and Bali would be the favourite destination, and most of them are bogans because in Bali you can just get high, plastered, fuck around for just 300$ return plane ticket which they earn in 2 days working if not one.
Why not Latin America, I suppose because it’s far and not cheap to fly there, and why UK because they have a Visa allowing them to work there easily as part of the commonwealth.
And finally, I would say that a lot of Aussies are just bogans, so that would be why they are a lot in UK. Well all that I suppose by having studied them during my 9 months stay in Australia…

    • I’d lean toward that myself, although I hope it is far from the case.

  2. I guess you’ve never met English people traveling then? Same thing – young people traveling in packs like to do stupid shit.

    • Not the same…they tend to be better mannered, and not travel for a straight year.

  3. Lumping a group of people together under one probably untrue stereotype is a great way to figure out how you should feel about them with out ever having to know their situations or talking to them.

    • It’s a generalization based on my own extensive travel experience and a significant number of people I’ve talked to. There’s a reason many brits have a negative opinion of Australians, it’s because of the type of Aussies they get exposed to.

  4. I recently read your article on Couch Surfing and thought that you had some valid points. After stumbling on this pile of absolute trash, I can’t take you seriously.
    Rubbish.

    • Instead of name calling, perhaps you could elaborate on your issues with what I have written?

  5. speaking about generalizations… try to enjoy life instead of making 50cents sociology.
